In 2008, APC WNSP conceptualised and implemented the first global Feminist Tech Exchange (FTX), which was an international gathering of women's rights activists and female technologists aimed at fostering skill and knowledge sharing between the two communities. The event was held in Cape Town, South Africa in November 2008.
FPT has always been an integral aspect of the FTX. Early notions of FPT shaped the broad plans for the FTX, specifically in defining the training tracks, the thematic discussions, the trainers and the participants. At that time, it was very loosely defined as way of understanding technology from feminist perspectives, meaning that technology will be viewed and discussed as it relates to women's rights issues, women's movement building and the power dynamics that shape technology.
During the FTX trainers preparatory meeting, the 30 feminist technology trainers were asked to define 'feminist technology training', specifically to identify and discuss the core values that will shape the FTX approach to training. The results of this process has informed what FPT is today.
