On Security / Privacy and Social Networking
Two weeks ago, from 1 -3 September, the first Philippine FTX was held. The main theme of the workshop was on 'Secure Online Communications'. The workshop was attended by eighteen women's rights advocates from the Philippines.
One of the sessions we held was on Social Networking and Security. I do think that this is the new challenge in any secure online communications discussion / training / conversation. Social networking has changed the terms in which we should be raising awareness on online security and privacy. Back before social networking became the biggest thing on the internet, online security trainings meant (generally) going through the following topics:
- how the internet works: understanding the TCP/IP suite, figuring out where the vulnerabilities are when we connect to the internet
- data security: keeping data protected and backing up
- access control: knowing how to keep others from your data through firewalls and password management
- viruses / spyware / malware: understanding malicious software and protecting yourself from them
- cryptology and encryption: understanding concepts like PGP and knowing the tools needed to use it
- anonymity and circumvention: how to hide your IP address when connected to the internet
These topics are still very much useful to know and understand (and implement when applicable) but they are no longer enough.

Le futur de la vie privée est un des thèmes qui m’ont directement frappe. La vie privée dans dix ans sera-t-elle différente de ce que nous connaissons aujourd’hui ?
Juriste de formation, sachant que le droit évolue je n’arrive quand même pas à m’y faire. Mais la victime de violence sur internet en moi se rappelle de combien je n’aimerais pas que ce qui m’est arrive, arrive aux autres.

La citation qui a retenu mon attention hier, juste avant le début du forum mondial sur la gouvernance de l’Internet, à Vilnius, Lituanie, c’est celle de Frank La Rue, Rapporteur des Nations-Unies pour la liberté d’expression et d’opinion
C’était à l’ occasion d’un atelier organisé par l’association pour les communications progressives.
Legal and Policy Framework in Uganda
The Uganda constitution provides for equality between women and men and for affirmative action. The entire chapter four of the constitution is devoted to protection of fundamental and other human rights and freedoms. There are specific provisions that relate to gender. The national objective and directive principles of State Policy number XV states that: “the state shall recognize the significant role that women play in society.”
A foreigner guest
To be a guest at an international hotel, one of this big gorgeous, fully equipped hotels with 24/7 guest assistance is making me always feel strange. The reason is quite easy, I am not usually a guest at five-star-high-security-profile-hotels.
